Communities that Move FORWARD

From its earliest days, Northwest Florida FORWARD recognized that economic competitiveness depends on more than jobs—it depends on quality of place. The first generation of the initiative partnered with local chambers of commerce and young professional organizations to assess the amenities, assets, and experiences that make communities vibrant and attractive to talent. A strong example is the Pensacola Young Professionals Quality of Life Survey, which continues to inform decision-making by local nonprofits and the City of Pensacola, helping shape policies that enhance livability and community development.

Housing quickly emerged as a critical priority. To support students, working families, and growing employers, the initiative championed the expansion of affordable student and workforce housing—particularly in underserved neighborhoods, coastal communities, and rural areas.

Today, that momentum is visible across the region:

  • Northwest Florida State College and Gulf Coast State College have added student housing to their campuses, strengthening campus life and increasing access to higher education
  • Okaloosa County is advancing strategic plans to expand
    workforce housing options.
  • The Chipola Street Project in Marianna is delivering affordable
    housing solutions for rural residents.

Together, these efforts demonstrate how a focus on quality of place translates into tangible investments—strengthening communities, supporting workforce growth, and ensuring Northwest Florida remains a region where people not only work, but thrive.
